Next Generation Jazz Festival

I was invited by Shelly Kinnune of Kansas City Early College Academy to be one of the artists/clinicians to work with a quintet of young jazz artists who are among the selected Special Guest Groups participating in the 2017 Next Generation Jazz Festival in Monterey, California.

The group is a fine jazz quintet (four members shown in the photo below). The wonderful young alto saxophonist is a private student.

The March 19 clinic went very well. I am not making the trip with them.

They are going to have a blast and meet other great artists of their generation …

FROM NEXT GENERATION JAZZ FESTIVAL: “Each spring we invite over 1300 of the nation’s top student musicians to play their hearts out at the Next Generation Jazz Festival (NGJF). One of the most inclusive festivals in the United States, the festival welcomes performances by middle, high school and collegiate groups of every kind: big bands, combos, vocal ensembles, vocal soloists, as well as conglomerate bands. The 47th Next Generation Jazz Festival takes place March 31-April 2, 2017.”

NGJF is part of the world-famous Monterey Jazz Festival.

Although I am not actually going with the 2017 group from Kansas City, I had the privilege of serving as the faculty representative among the adult chaperones for Mr. Leon Brady‘s original Kansas City Youth Jazz program on their trip to the 2010 NGJF.

The top Kansas City Youth Jazz groups, the Reno Club Big Band and Reno Club Combo performed.

The students were well received by everyone who heard them play.

Here are a couple of photos from that trip. Also see my Facebook photo album here.

Mr. Burnett is a Conn-Selmer Artist / Clinician.
He endorses and plays Selmer (Paris) Saxophones.
